Winter

“Always winter, but never Christmas.” From Narnia - C.S.Lewis

You will, I am sure, remember that the white witch cast her spell on Narnia decreeing that it must always be winter, but never Christmas.

As I recall, when Aslan returned to save Narnia, a rather intriguing tale unfolded when the witch was no more, and the snow begin to melt. As such, Father Christmas appeared with helpful gifts for the children.

A shield, a sword, a belt and a sheath for Peter. A bow and a quiver full of arrows and a horn for Susan. For Lucy, a small bottle of healing liquid and a small dagger. And Edmund, who was not present when Father Christmas appeared, did not receive a gift at the time but that does not mean he was gift less, for Aslan gave his life for Edmund.

When Father Christmas said, “Tools, not toys," he explained, saying,

“Bear them well"—the time to use them may be near at hand.

Many years ago, I heard someone say that it was winter in their heart. Whatever had happened is his early life, he wanted to remain cold and bitter. Over time, however, his heart melted, and he began to heal. He converted to Christianity and went on to help many more people discover the story of Jesus.

Hopefully, many more people will understand that God demonstrates His own love towards us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. May any cold bitterness in your hearts melt away as you remember that you have the gifts that God has given to each of you, ready to use. The symbolism of the resurrected Aslan reminds me of the resurrected Christ who became so poor, born in such humble beginnings, that we may become rich in his kingdom.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas,

Carolann
